National Survey of Student Engagement
Ohio Wesleyan University Student Results

Ohio Wesleyan places a high value on engaged and outcomes oriented learning.  Results from the 2007 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) demonstrate that, when compared to over 600 colleges and universities across the country, Ohio Wesleyan surpasses the norm in ensuring that its students realize the measurable benefits that come from a highly interactive, challenging, supportive and enriching education.

On average, Ohio Wesleyan students reported greater engagement than the national comparison group in the domains of Enriching Educational Experiences and Student-Faculty Interaction, Supportive Campus Environment and Level of Academic Challenge.  Student engagement increased over years of enrollment, with seniors scoring consistently higher than first-year students in most domains.  Seniors reported significantly greater levels of engagement, when compared to the national sample, in the areas of Enriching Educational Experiences and Student-Faculty Interaction, Supportive Campus Environment and Level of Academic Challenge.

Many colleges and universities across the nation voluntarily use the NSSE survey to measure student participation in programs and activities that contribute to learning and personal development.  The activities measured are linked with positive outcomes in the college experience.  In 2007, 610 institutions participated in the NSSE survey, which is administered to both first-year students and seniors.

Characteristics associated with engagement include:

  1. Active, rather than passive, learning
  2. Student-faculty contact
  3. Time on task
  4. Cooperation among students
  5. High expectations
  6. Experiences with diversity
  7. Participation in co-curricular activities

Ohio Wesleyan’s first-year student response rate to the survey was 34% and its senior response rate was 40%.
