The Battling Bishops of OWU are winners. In regular season and post season play, the Bishops are tough and tenacious, savvy and successful. We are tournament champions, conference champions, and national champions.

OWU athletes compete in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC), one of the best leagues in NCAA Division III. For seven of the last 12 years, OWU has won the conference All-Sports Trophy for excellence in both women's and men's sports. In the Sears Directors' Cup standings, recognizing the top all-around programs, OWU has consistently ranked in the top 20 schools nationally.

In NCAA national competition during recent years, both the men's and women's soccer teams have brought home national championships -- in 1998 and 2001, respectively. Women's basketball became the first NCAC team in history to advance to the NCAA national semifinals during the 2000-2001 season. Men's lacrosse advanced to the division playoffs. And golf tied for eighth in the Division III tournament.

In conference play, men's soccer won the NCAC title for the tenth time in 15 years. Baseball won the NCAC championship and became the first team in league history to complete an undefeated league season. Women's basketball won the NCAC tournament. Men's indoor track won the conference title with a record number of points. And men's outdoor track won the NCAC title, also with a record number of points.

In the transition to professional sports, Dan Marchetti (baseball), Ike Reid (football), and Kyle Stanton (baseball) have been chosen as free agents in recent NFL and MLB drafts.

[ A Tradition of Excellence ]

The balance that is central to the OWU liberal arts education extends to its athletics program. Everyone takes an integrated approach to our students' experience. Both coaches and faculty are supportive, so students are not conflicted.

"We understand that academics is number one," says Dr. Jay Martin, director of athletics and head men's soccer coach. "We are educators who coach, not coaches who teach. OWU's academic quality is well-known. That's why students are considering us."

At OWU, winning is measured by more than the score. "Through athletic participation, scholar-athletes learn what it takes to be successful," Martin says. "Success is not just defined by wins and losses; it is also defined by what it takes to be successful."

Setting goals is an important part of athletics at OWU. Bishop coaches help their players assess their progress -- as a team and as individuals. Working with their coach, their captain, and their teammates, OWU scholar-athletes continually raise their sights in their efforts to achieve their personal best while making the greatest possible contribution to the team.
