The Natural Sciences: Geology

G EOLOGY AND GEOGRAPHY are separate majors housed in one department. They enrich one another because each is concerned with earth and its inhabitants. Geology is the science of the earth and earth-like planets; it focuses on investigating and understanding the planet’s natural processes, as well as the materials, structure, and history of the earth. You’ll not only learn geology, you’ll “do” geology—in the field, in faculty-student collaborative research, and in off-campus internships in venues such as the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

Majors: Professional Geology, General Geology, Earth Science (which specifically prepares students for teaching licensure in the State of Ohio and includes student teaching in local high schools)

Minor: Geology

Beyond-the-classroom opportunities: Independent study, directed reading. In-the-field studies in the Appalachian Mountains, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, the Appalachian Basin, and the United States mid-continent. The Patricia Belt Conrades Summer Science Research Symposium, Women in Science, Sigma Gamma Epsilon (earth science honorary society). Professional internships. Student board.
