The Social Sciences: Geography

G EOLOGY AND GEOGRAPHY are separate majors housed in one department. Majoring in geography gives you a greater appreciation of the ways human beings alter the environment and how the environment alters human beings. The major gets you ready for a wide variety of careers—urban planning, environmental law, diplomacy, transportation, and international business, to name only a few. The program in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and computer mapmaking is not available at most private liberal arts colleges, but in our fully equipped GIS laboratory you may find yourself working on real-world problems for city, county, and state government. Faculty members are experts in such fields as urbanization, weather, climate, environmental issues, GIS and computer mapping, urban culture, and historical geography; they’ll help you see the world in a brand-new way.

Major and Minor: Geography

Beyond-the-classroom opportunities: Study abroad, independent study, directed reading, internships, field experience. Student board.
